PE and sports premium deadline extension

Wednesday 17th March 2021

The Department for Education (DfE) has extended the 31st March deadline for spending the Primary PE and sport premium funding that was carried forward from the 2019/20 academic year.

Schools will now have until the end of this (2020/21) academic year to spend the carried forward funding, in line with the deadline for spending this year’s Primary PE and sport premium allocation.

Jude Taylor, CEO of Together Active, said;

“This is a positive move by the DfE and will give schools with an underspend the opportunity to develop sustainable physical activity programmes to support children returning from lockdown now and in the future. Physical activity is a crucial element of the recovery, but we know that children’s activity levels have plummeted, with a recent Youth Sports Trust survey showing an alarming 78% of young people have been doing less than the recommended 60 minutes of activity per day.

“PE and sport in schools will make a key difference in helping children rediscover their joy of movement, supporting their academic and social development as the world slowly returns to normal. We recommend that schools use this extra time to review the needs of their pupils and develop clear plans to spend the money to have a great and lasting impact.”
