Staffordshire golf club hits the mark with national award

Tuesday 26th September 2017

Newcastle under Lyme Golf Club in Staffordshire, which is backing the drive to grow the game, has won a national award from England Golf.

The club, an 18-hole classic English parkland course founded in 1908, has just received the GolfMark Award.

GolfMark is an official seal of approval for clubs which successfully work to develop the game in four ways:

  • By attracting new members and encouraging existing members to play more
  • Using practical business planning to develop the club
  • Offering coaching and playing opportunities for all golfers
  • Ensuring safeguarding policies are in place

Club Secretary Manager, Sue Walsh, who led the club’s push to GolfMark, said: “I am absolutely delighted that the club has achieved this accreditation. We are always looking at different initiatives to increase our membership and to offer the best experience at the club for our members and visitors.

“Achieving GolfMark shows our commitment towards improving our practices and the further development of Newcastle under Lyme Golf Club.  A big thank you to Ben Johnson (England Golf Club Support Officer) for all his help and support during this process.”

Sue Moore, who worked with the club to achieve GolfMark, added: “As an active member of the golf club and the ladies’ section, I am delighted with our award, and so pleased that the club is actively looking to encourage membership growth.

“We are very proud to build on our successes and develop new ideas, such as 9-hole playing memberships for ladies which can work alongside group coaching from our pro. This will hopefully encourage more women to not only have a go at golf but become  part of a wonderful golf club.”

The award was presented to Newcastle under Lyme Golf Club by Ben Johnson, England Golf’s Staffordshire Club Support Officer, who said: “I’m delighted that Newcastle have achieved GolfMark and I’m proud of the commitment from the club throughout the process. The national recognition is well deserved.

“Newcastle is a club which is always looking at new ways to introduce new people to golf and to offer a better experience to those who currently play the game. I look forward to continuing to work with everybody at the golf club.”

The GolfMark award was developed by England Golf and also integrates Sport England’s Clubmark award – a national standard for quality sports clubs recognised across the country.

GolfMark brings a number of benefits to clubs including raising awareness, access to funding, business and marketing support and training opportunities for staff and volunteers. To find out more visit www.golfmark.org
