In March 2026, we proudly hosted our first Safer Spaces, Stronger Minds Conference, an annual event designed to bring together leisure centres, gyms, and activity providers who are committed to strengthening their approach to safeguarding, mental wellbeing, and inclusion.
Delivered in partnership with Active Derbyshire, the conference connects professionals who share a passion for creating environments where people feel protected, supported, and empowered.
Held in East Staffordshire, the full-day event featured an inspiring programme of expert speakers, including:
Liam Baker (Together We Lift) – Combining strength training with mental health support
Mhairi Maclennan (Kyniska) – A leading voice in safe sport and athlete advocacy
NWG Network – Active Bystander training for leisure and gym settings
Mandy MacDonald (LADO – Derby City) – Understanding safeguarding referrals and procedures

Aligned with our organisational theme for 2026 of Safety, the conference created a space where challenging conversations could take place. We encouraged providers to ask difficult questions, share best practice, and learn from one another in a supportive environment.
In a competitive and fast-paced sector, safeguarding and welfare can sometimes be overlooked or providers may simply feel unsure where to begin. This event aimed to address those challenges by offering practical guidance, shared learning, and clear pathways to improve policies, procedures, and everyday practice.
Beyond knowledge-sharing, the conference also empowered providers to explore new ways of working that help people feel even more confident, respected, and protected within their facilities.
Our ambition is for Safer Spaces, Stronger Minds to become an annual event. Throughout the year, we will continue to support providers through further training opportunities, access to our Safeguarding and Welfare Advisor, and strengthened partnerships with professionals across the sector.
Together, we are building safer environments and stronger minds for everyone.
