Local Pupils Enjoy Summer Sporting Success At The Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent School Games

Monday 26th June 2017

Keele University was a hive of sporting activity on 23rd June 2017 as over 2,000 pupils from across Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent took part in the School Games Level Three festival.  Pupils aged 7-15 years took part in a variety of different sporting events showcasing their talent in some closely fought competitions.

A dance performance by Newcastle-under-Lyme College opened the proceedings followed by words of encourage from our sporting stars Sam Quek and local paralympic athlete Ian Marsden.  A mass warm up got everyone on their feet enthused and motivated for the competitions ahead.

Olympic Gold medallist, Sam Quek MBE was on hand to provide words of advice and encouragement to athletes throughout the day. Sam Quek plays as a defender for both England and Great Britain’s hockey teams. She won gold, playing a key role as part of the British team at the 2016 Summer Olympics, who beat the Netherlands on a penalty shoot-out.  Local Paralympian, Ian Marsden, also attended the event and inspired participants and volunteers by sharing his sporting journey.  Ian began as a record-breaking junior world champion powerlifter. Then, after suffering a serious spinal injury, he embarked on an illustrious handcycling and shooting career representing Great Britain.  In 2016 Ian won a Bronze medal in paracanoe at the Rio Paralympic Games. The sporting stars were available all day to answer questions and present medalsto the winning teams.

Competitions took place in tri golf, netball, trampolining, tag rugby, cross country, rounders, and boccia.  Additionally, there were a range of ‘come-and-try’ activities taking place in the athletes village giving youngsters the chance to try some new fun activities when not competing.

As well as taking part as competitors, pupils were also given the opportunity to get involved as volunteers, helping to referee tournaments, provide media coverage and assist with event management, gaining valuable career-related skills along the way.

The School Games is in its sixth year and is a national school sport competition structure, using the inspiration of London’s Olympics and Paralympics to help transform competitive sport in schools and get more people playing sport.  School teams have qualified for this event by winning their district-level tournament, organised by their local School Games Organiser.
