Commonwealth and Canada Gold

Friday 13th October 2017

Master Peter Johnson travelled to Montreal Canada to compete in two back-to-back tournaments to be held over five days! There were over one thousand competitors and Taekwondo Canada hosted the CTU Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships over the first two days and the Canada open over the next three days!

Canada GoldTaekwondo Master Peter Johnson, a 7th Degree Dan grade and last year’s Canada open champion , was out to retain his title and to go one better at the commonwealths to improve on his commonwealth bronze he took at the games in Scotland in 2010 !

Already holding a World and European title this was to be a big test for Johnson as two competitions back-to-back was going to be hard, and injuries that he had from the Europeans in Greece were still impeding his training and focus.

The competitions were both held at the prestigious Complexe Sportif Claude Robillard  Stadium. Master Johnson was competing in the Male Individual U65 years group. Going through to the final round Johnson took Commonwealth gold with a winning performance and score of 6.88 which was one of his best scores to date.

Two days later, at the same complex, the Canada Open was scheduled and this was a G1 ranked event holding world ranking points. Again Master Johnson’s World and European experience counted and in the final he took another gold podium position his score less than the score in the Commonwealths but he retained his title and another gold in the bag for his club and country.

This was an extraordinary accomplishment as still carrying injuries and taking two major titles was a highlight of his career!
