Staffordshire to back Adam Peaty in BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Friday 18th December 2015

People from across Staffordshire are being urged to vote for record-breaking Uttoxeter swimmer Adam Peaty in this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

2015 has been a fantastic year for the 20-year-old Uttoxeter sportsman who won three golds at the World Championships in Russia earlier in the year and holds the world record for the 50m and 100m breaststroke.

Adam, who started his swimming career at the Dove Valley Swimming Club in Uttoxeter, is also being tipped to be the first British man for 28 years to win an Olympic swimming title at next year’s Olympic Games in Rio.

Congratulating Adam on his achievements, Philip Atkins, Leader of Staffordshire County Council now wants people to vote for Adam during the live show on BBC One this Sunday night.

Philip said: “Adam is a remarkable young sportsperson and has had a truly phenomenal couple of years, smashing the world record at the Commonwealth Games and then his gold medals at the World Aquatics Championships in Russia over the summer.

“He’s a great role model for our young people here in Staffordshire and we are all very proud of him. Being shortlisted for the award for the second year running is wonderful news for him and is testament to his determination to be the best.  All we need to do now is vote for him to see him crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year.”

Cllr Janet Eagland, Chairman of Staffordshire County Council added: “It’s people like Adam who make us very proud and help us put Staffordshire on the map.  He’s a great role model for people right across the county especially young people and can show what hard work and no doubt, a great natural talent can achieve.

“I’m sure His successes over the last few years will act as a real inspiration to everyone, whether it’s to succeed in their chosen sport or to take up an activity for the first time.  I’ll definitely be voting for Adam on Sunday and I hope people will join me in showing their support.  Come on Adam!”

Adam joins athletes Jessica Ennis-Hill, Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford on the shortlist of twelve for the prestigious BBC accolade, along with Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton and tennis player Andy Murray.

People can vote during the programme at www.bbc.co.uk/sport or by calling the numbers that appear on the screen during the live show on BBC One on Sunday 20 December.
