Staffordshire club is powering up Get into golf drive

A Staffordshire club is helping power up the drive to encourage more people to take up golf.

Lakeside Golf Club can lay claim to one of the country’s more unusual locations.

The 18-hole parkland course is situated within the confines of the Rugeley Power Station.

Now the club is adding fuel to the campaign to make it easier than ever for people to give the sport a try by supporting the Staffordshire Golf Development Group both as a Get into golf centre and by promoting Express Golf.

Get into golf offers a range of discounted coaching programmes which allow beginners or those returning to the sport the chance to develop the skills to enjoy the sport out on the course.

Golf Express is Staffordshire GDG’s ground-breaking scheme which recognises that time is at a premium for many people and offers a short version of the game which still allows players to enjoy its social and health benefits.

The golf course quickly followed the opening of the power station in 1961, when a sports and social club was formed for employees, which included a new Golf Society.

It started life as a six-hole pitch and putt course but the addition of new holes brought it up to a nine hole layout official recognised by the Staffordshire Union of Golf Clubs.

The Lakeside name was adopted in 1975, since when the members have developed a further nine holes on the riverside.

The present layout is just short of 6,000 yards, which makes it an ideal place to enjoy a golfing challenge without being overpowered by the length of the holes. Plus there are lots of others sports and activities available in and around the social club like tennis, fishing, bowls, football, snooker to name a few.

Coaching on offer includes regular beginners, ladies and junior sessions as well as lessons for those looking to cut their handicap.

Staffordshire GDG development officer Gareth Shaw says: “Lakeside is an enthusiastic supporter of the work going on to help more people take up golf.

“Its location within the power station grounds means not everyone may be aware that it is there, but they can be assured of a warm welcome and the chance to get the most from their golf.”

If you wish to enjoy a round at a special price of just £10 until March 31 or are interested in membership contact;
