British Cycling- Course available on Ride Leadership

Wednesday 30th August 2017

This course combines Levels 1 and 2 of the Ride Leadership Awards, and is run over consecutive days to allow experienced road riders the chance to qualify in a single weekend.

Who is the course for?

This two day course is aimed at experienced road cyclists who would like to start leading or might already be performing the role of ride leader with a club, group or with friends.

If you are looking to start a business leading on the road or simply want to develop your knowledge and skills through ride leadership, this course is for you.

What does the course entail?

The two-day course is comprised of eight core modules delivered online (pre-course), in the classroom and practically on the ride. Topics include: how to create a flowing journey, route planning and managing risks and emergencies.

What do learners receive?

  • Access to online modules via British Cycling Learning throughout the course and available post-course as CPD
  • 16 hours of face-to-face contact with a British Cycling tutor, including theoretical and practical elements as well as assessment
  • British Cycling Ride Membership which includes Insurance for Coaches, Leaders and Instructors (subject to obtaining the qualification and a valid first aid certificate)
  • British Cycling branded resources
  • Accredited British Cycling qualification
  • Certification

Pre-requisites

To attend the training you will need to:

  • be 18 years old or over
  • be competent in the techniques required to safely ride on roads and traffic free paths and negotiate features within these environments, such as traffic, hills and road furniture
  • be a regular group cyclist or high in confidence cycling in close proximity to other cyclists
  • have appropriate fitness levels to cycle 30+ miles with enough in reserve to safely lead and manage a group.
  • Have a working and appropriate bike for the distances required.

Assessment

The tutor will facilitate your assessment throughout the day to encourage an environment of continuous learning. Learners will be supported throughout and provided with personal action plans for future development after the assessment.

A practical assessment will take place on each day, during a full led ride journey shared with other learners and the tutor (3-4 hours, 15 miles day one, 30 miles day two). During the ride each learner will be assigned to lead sections totalling around 2-5 miles.

The assessment route is designed and pre-planned by the tutor to enable you to demonstrate competence at the limits of the remit of a Level 1 and Level 2 Ride Leader. You will be expected to fulfil all assessment criteria, including appropriate personal, cycling and group management skills.

Referral and reassessment

We are of course hopeful that learners are certified through their first assessment, but there are occasions where this may not be the case and referral can occur.

If a learner does not satisfy the assessment criteria for the Level 1 (day one) they will be automatically withdrawn from day two. No refunds can be given but support will be offered to attend a future course.

What does the course cost?

In 2017 the course will cost £175 per learner.

Available courses
