Cheslyn Hay 2019 Annual Club Championships Results

Monday 14th October 2019

More than four hours of tennis saw 19 finals all being contested at Cheslyn Hay Leisure Centre for 6 years old to Adults.

Ant Boland won his second men’s singles championship, overcoming rising Junior star Will Jones 7-5 6-3. This was a close affair with long rallies testing their endurance.

Keir Bruder had a busy day of matches competing in 3 finals. In his first final he played in the Under 14 Singles Finals against Jarnel Dhillon who played some excellent shot-making to beat Keir in two sets.

However, it was a different story in the U14 Doubles where he teamed up with Zak Hurford to beat Will Mittens and Alfie Kingham in close match going to 3rd set tie-break which finished 10-7.

If this wasn’t enough, the mother and son pairing of Keir and Corinna Bruder beat Ryan Lockett and Janet Bailey 5-3 4-1 to round off a successful day.

The men’s doubles final was won by Nick Plant and Thom Lilley. Nick and Thom started quickly with attacking net play and was too strong for Ryan Lockett & Dan Davidov.

This was the total opposite in the Women’s Doubles where Judi Stead & Samantha Allan-Smith eventually beat Claire Bailey & Janet Bailey 3-6 6-3 11-9 after losing the first set.

The Juniors were also able to take centre stage in the Club Finals Day with Under 9, Under 11, Under 12, Under 14 and Under 18 Singles and Doubles events.

This also included events for emerging players who are starting to play the game.

The Under 9 singles showed confidence and developing skills with Jamie Westwood beating Matthew Robertson  in 3 tie-break sets. In the Under 11 Singles Mwaba Mulenga beat Caitlin Green 4-1 4-0.

Tournament organiser Chris Perrin said: “This was our biggest Championships yet with 190 entries. The club is always open to new people with beginner coaching and also supporting competitive opportunities.”

“We had over four hours of quality, competitive tennis played in a great spirit both with the junior and adult finals. It is always one of the highlights of the year.”
