Stafford & Stone Canoe Club’s Paul Sunderland who came fourth in the 2014 Youth Olympics and was a nominee in last year’s Sports Stafford Borough Awards is to receive a Grant from The Arts & Sports Trust.

Paul competed in many international and UK slaloms throughout 2015, as well as finishing college and gaining a place at Derby University. Sadly on a return flight from Poland Paul’s Kayak was broken. The application was put into the trust by S&SCC on behalf of Paul, “We were only too happy to support Paul with his grant application. Paul has been with the club for many years and we have seen him grow into an outstanding paddler and athlete.  This grant will enable Paul to purchase the new boat and equipment he needs.” Deborah Homer – Gateline & Publicity Officer S&SCC

“The Arts and Sports Trust is a charity that supports young people up to the age of 18 by helping them to achieve their dreams of a career in Arts or Sports. We know how expensive it can be to obtain the high quality of training, equipment and experience required to reach the very top of their chosen career. This grant has been awarded to help Paul to realise that dream.” Arts & Sports Trust.

As a member of British Canoeing’s England Performance Squad Paul is well into his winter training and looking forward to the 2016 season as an U23. Paul’s future aims – to secure a place on the Canoe Slalom U23/Senior Team, to qualify for the Olympics and to achieve a 1st class degree in Product Design.

Reach a Resolution to Coach in 2016

sports coach UK is encouraging women of all ages and backgrounds to make a health and fitness resolution with a difference this year to Reach into coaching. A new year is a fantastic time for you to try something new. Whether you are thinking about coaching for the first time or want to improve your current coaching practices, Reach can support you.

Reach is a campaign created by sports coach UK to support women in coaching. It aims to identify and engage women that have a broad range of passions and experience that can be used to help get more people involved in sport through coaching.

Since launching in October, Reach has worked hard to help partners provide more opportunities for women to begin their coaching journeys and for existing coaches to develop as a coach. One example takes place in South and West Yorkshire. The Yorkshire Sport Foundation are working in eight of their most deprived communities around the region to support women with great influence in their communities to get their friends and families more active.

Become someone’s role model this year. Find out if coaching is for you and how to get started today by visiting the Reach website at: www.reachintocoaching.co.uk

ukactive Avoid large fines by following industry best practice

In the biggest shake up to health and safety offences since the 70s, the guidelines will create a nine stage process setting out a clear and formulaic approach to sentencing. The process requires the judge to determine, using criteria set out in tables, the culpability of the defendant from low to very high and then determine the harm risked by the breach from one of three categories. These two factors are then plotted on a grid to determine a starting point of the fine and the fine range.

It has always been an important part of the process to make submissions as to the appropriate culpability or harm level associated with the offence. Under the new guidelines this significance is underlined as the relationship between each place on the matrix, moving from one harm level to the next typically increases the starting point by over 100%.

To reduce the risk of incurring these increased fines, organisations are advised by the guidelines to comply with the law and follow company procedures. Industry best practice such as the ukactive Code of Practice can potentially save organisations millions, failing to comply with industry guidelines could result in a higher culpability.
