Support offered to Stoke-on-Trent’s sporting stars
Sportspeople of all ages are being encouraged to apply for a share of £45,000 funding to help them reach their potential
The Talented Athlete Support (TAS) programme is now open for applications with the aim of nurturing existing talent and unearthing the next Steven Lewis, Angela Smith or Imran Sherwani.
Stoke-on-Trent is a European City of Sport for 2016 and the city council is delighted to be supporting athletes and sportspeople by making up to £1,000 available to those who qualify.
Support will be offered to people currently taking part in 46 sports, from athletics and angling to cycling, gymnastics, swimming and wheelchair basketball. The funding will be made available over a three-year period to people who live in the city and have represented their sport at county level or above in the last 12 months. The money is to help with the cost of travelling to events or specialist training, personal equipment and kits and access to sports science services at Staffordshire University.
All applications received will be assessed by a seven-strong panel of local representatives who will meet up to four times a year. Up to a quarter of the annual budget of £15,000 will be given out each time the panel meets, with any money left rolled over to the next meeting.
Councillor Terry Follows, cabinet member with responsibility for leisure, said: “This is all about helping our talented local athletes reach their full potential and excel in their chosen sport.
“As a city we have a rich sporting heritage and some very talented sportspeople which we’re very proud of, but we know there can be a lot of costs that come with a sports career such as travel expenses and competition entries. This funding should address some of those potential barriers and make a positive contribution to the development of our sportspeople.
“A key part of being a European City of Sport for 2016 is making sure the benefits go much further than just this year and I’m very proud we are giving people the support they need to pursue their sporting dreams.”
Applicants can apply for support from the scheme once a year. They will be assessed against set criteria and the individual and their coaches might be asked to attend the panel hearing to support the assessment process. Successful applicants will be able to access specialist sports science services at Staffordshire University.

Playing Fields Legacy Fund application process
The Playing Fields Legacy Fund is a small charity established to get more people, especially the young and disadvantaged, playing sport through more effective use of playing fields.
We offer grants of up to £10,000 to stimulate new investment in playing fields, including funding for drainage, levelling, returfing, ATPs, MUGAs and pavilions.

Groundwork
Bags of Help grants scheme Round 2 opens on 18 April
Round two of the Bags of Help grants scheme, organised by Groundwork and funded by the proceeds of the Tesco carrier bag levy, will open on Monday 18 April.
Grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 are available to local community groups who are invited to submit proposals for projects like new pocket parks; sports and play facilities; school grounds; nature reserves; green corridors; woodland walks and community gardens and allotments.
Groundwork will assess and shortlist all of the applications received and pass them on to a Tesco shortlisting panel who will agree the three successful local projects that will be voted on by Tesco customers’ in-store over two set weekends.
EFDS – Typhoo and EFDS tea-m up again to support disabled athletes
Following last year’s successful programme, Typhoo and the national charity the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) have teamed up again to ensure more disabled athletes have access to participation opportunities across England. In 2016, Typhoo will add an extra ‘OO’ to the National Junior Athletics Championships and eight regional qualifiers, with an aim is to increase the number of disabled people in athletics. In 2015, 1400 disabled athletes took part across England and everyone involved enjoyed the benefits of Typhoo’s partnership. Now, the tea company is brewing up again with EFDS’s events programme to ensure more disabled athletes have access to local and national competition.
Disabled athletes will be part of the regional qualifiers that lead to the National Junior Athletics Championships climax on 2-3 July. Over 250 12-20 year olds will take part at Warwick Athletics Stadium, where spectators can spot future stars among competitors.

Funding Available from The Coalfields Community Investment Programme (England)Announcement from The Coalfields Regeneration Trust:-
The Coalfields Regeneration Trust is dedicated to improving the quality of life for the 5.5 million people living in Britain’s former mining communities. Many of these communities still require support due to the huge impact the closure of the mines had upon them.
The Coalfields Community Investment Programme (England) is a £500,000 fund created to support activities that tackle some of the key challenges that still remain in coalfield communities. The fund is open to projects that deliver in the top 30% most deprived coalfield communities and that will make a positive difference in addressing a number of themes.
Funding Available from Tesco of up to £12,000 for Community Projects
TESCO are inviting local community groups and good causes to apply for their share of a £12MILLION carrier bag charge fund.
The supermarket teamed up with Groundwork to launch its Bags of Help initiative, which sees grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to environmental and greenspace projects.
Millions of shoppers voted in stores up and down the country for the last round of funding – with over £11.5MILLION being awarded to winning projects.
Now Tesco are urging groups to get their applications in for the next round of funding – which will run from 18 April to 3 June.
