Monday 11th July 2016

WM Community Sports Awards 1

Last week saw the launch of the West Midlands Community Sports Awards which will be presented by Nick Owen and Mary Rhodes from BBC Midlands on the 30th November at Villa Park. All nominations will come from local awards evenings organised by county sports partnerships.

Nominations will open on the 1st AUGUST for the Sport Across Staffordshire  & Stoke-on-Trent Sports Awards, recognising community sporting heroes from across the county.

SASSOT is urging people to put forward their local sporting heroes, especially those whose lives have been improved through the power of physical activity and sport.

The winners will be recognised at a prestigious awards ceremony on 1st November, and given a ‘golden ticket’ into the West Midlands Community Sports Awards – where the top young talent, best clubs and projects, and selfless individuals from across the region will be recognised.

It is free to nominate and all those put forward could also be in with a chance of winning the BBC Unsung Hero award at this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Mark Thornewill, Director, from SASSOT, said: “There are thousands of people across Staffordshire doing fantastic things to inspire people to lead healthier, fun and active lives, from swimming to softball, cricket to keep fit.

“We want to recognise those individuals, whether they are coaching future talent, reaching out to less advantaged people, or achieving sporting success of their own – but we need the community to nominate them.”

There are six categories in the SASSOT Sports Awards including Coach of the Year, Community Club of the Year, Community Project of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Aspiring Talent and The Power of Sport Award.

Winners will join those from five other local County Sports Partnerships for the prestigious West Midlands Community Sports Awards (WMCSA), which will be held on 30 November at Villa Park.

This year’s awards were officially launched with a VIP event hosted by headline sponsors 360 Sport & Fitness, the new £50 million state-of-the-art home for University of Birmingham Sport.

Mark Thornewill adds: “We are delighted that our local winners will feed into the West Midlands Community Sports Awards, which recognises the pinnacle of community sporting success in the region.

“Our local winners could be up on stage with some of the biggest sports stars in the Midlands, not to mention the chance to be put forward for the BBC Unsung Hero award at Sports Personality of the Year.”
