Double funding so every 10-year-old can learn to ride a bike

Cycling UK is calling on the Government to increase funding for cycle training, known as Bikeability, so that all Year 6 students in England can have the opportunity “to develop a lifelong skill that would be good for their health, and also the environment.”

  • Charity calls on Government to increase £13m Bikeability funding
  • Cost of training is one off £18 per head investment to learn “lifelong skill”
  • Currently 3% of children aged 11-16 cycle to school
  • According to NHS report a third of Year 6 pupils are overweight or obese

The appeal comes on the back of a Government announcement made on October 11th 2019 that it would invest £13m into Bikeability for the following year so 50% of English primary schools can continue to provide cycle training.

This is an incremental increase on funding for Bikeability which in 2018/19 was £12.5m.

Regular exercise ‘highly beneficial’ for heart patients, regardless of age

Health Club Management reports that regular exercise is highly beneficial for all patients with cardiovascular disease regardless of age.

A study published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology investigated the effects of an exercise‐based cardiac rehabilitation programme on a range of physical and psychological parameters in young, old, and very old patients.

It observed 733 patients at Cardiac Rehabilitation at the Clinique Les Rosiers, Dijon, France from January 2015 to September 2017.

All of the patients completed a 25-session cardiac rehabilitation programme.

For the purposes of the study, the patients were divided into three subgroups: less than 65 years old; between 65 and 80 years old; and 80 years or older. Physical and psychological variables such as scores of anxiety and depression were evaluated for all patients before and after cardiac rehabilitation.

Following the intervention, all patients experienced improvements.
