Local Sporting Heroes Honoured at SASSOT Sports Awards

SASSOT Community Sport Awards 2016 saw some of the county’s finest sporting clubs and volunteers coming together to be honoured. Held at Staffordshire County Council, on 1st November, the event recognised the achievements and commitment of local people in developing local community sport.  Awards were up for grabs in five categories and proved a challenging task for the judging panel in selecting county winners.

And the winners were:

  • Community Coach of the Year 2016 – David Rigby (Kidsgrove Cricket Club)
  • Community Club of the Year 2016 – Tamworth Boxing Club
  • Community Sports Project of the Year 2016 – Real Girls (Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles – Cannock)
  • Community Sports Volunteer of the Year 2016 – Jason Christer (St George’s Knights Wheelchair Football)
  • Aspiring Athlete of the Year 2016 – Bethan Rees (Javelin)

Special recognition awards were presented to:

  • West Midlands Satellite Club Participant of the Year 2016 – Kieran (Cheslyn Hay Table Tennis Club)
  • SASSOT Satellite Club of the Year 2016 – North Staffordshire Rowing Club
  • SASSOT Sportivate Project of the Year 2016 – The Right Stuff Boxing Project (Stafford)

And the runners up were:

  • Community Coach of The Year (Runner Up) – Julie Dolman (Stafford Netball Club)
  • Community Club of The Year (Runner Up) – Stafford & Stone Canoe Club
  • Community Project of The Year (Runner Up) – The Right Stuff Boxing Project
  • Aspiring Athlete of The Year  (Runner Up) – Harry Yates
  • The Power of Sport Award (in association with BBC Radio Stoke) – Simon Mear (Burton Albion Community Trust)
