Medal Rush for Local Children at County Sport Celebration

Young people from South Stoke, Newcastle, Tamworth and Lichfield are celebrating after winning medals at the Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent School Games Winter Festival.

More than 500 competitors represented their schools in Sportshall Athletics, High Five netball and basketball at the event, which took place in Stoke-on-Trent on Tuesday 2nd February.

The School Games winter festival began with an opening ceremony which was compered by ex-Olympian Christian Malcolm and saw fantastic performances by Newcastle-Under-Lyme College Performing Arts Centre and freestyle footballer Ash Randall.

Local Organising Committee Chair Simon Ascroft, Headteacher at Biddulph High School, said: “The Winter Festival was a fantastic event once again and the performances of our young people were exceptional across the board”.

“Congratulations to the teams from The Friary School (Lichfield), St Joseph’s College (South Stoke), Wilnecote High School (Tamworth), Newcastle-under-Lyme School (Newcastle)  on their victories”.

Their hard work finally paid off from months of hard work and competitions to qualify to take part in the festival, and subsequently be crowned County Champions.

The Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent School Games Winter Festival 2016 is organised by a Local Organising Committee in conjunction with Sport Across Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent with funding from Sport England through National Lottery.
