New-look England men’s squads announced

England Golf has announced new-look men’s squads for the 2017/18 training programme. 

The entire England Squad is new after almost all the previous members departed for the professional ranks. The eight players are: Jake Burnage of Devon (pictured), Todd Clements of Essex, Jack Gaunt of Staffordshire, David Hague of Yorkshire, Matthew Jordan of Cheshire, Gian-Marco Petrozzi of Staffordshire, Charlie Strickland of Sussex and Andrew Wilson of Durham. 

Burnage, Jordan and Petrozzi have all been promoted from last year’s A squad. 

The England A Squad for 2017/18 has four new members joining George Bloor of Derbyshire and Josh McMahon of Cheshire. They are Bailey Gill of Yorkshire, Ben Jones of Northamptonshire, Tom Sloman of Somerset and Nick Poppleton of Yorkshire.

Jake Burnage, 22, (Saunton) won the South of England amateur and the Hampshire Hog, was runner-up in the Brabazon Trophy and third in the Lytham Trophy. (Image copyright Leaderboard Photography)

Todd Clements, 21, (Braintree) won the England amateur championship at The Berkshire and had a string of high finishes in 2017. 

Jack Gaunt, 25, (Drayton Park) is threatening a big win after being runner-up in the English amateur, Welsh open and Midland open championships. 

David Hague, 21, (Malton & Norton) won the Lagonda Trophy, was runner-up in the West of England championship and third in the Berkshire Trophy.

Matthew Jordan, 21, (Royal Liverpool) capped an outstanding 2017 with selection for GB&I’s Walker Cup team. He won the England Golf men’s order of merit after a season which included victory in the St Andrews Links Trophy. 

Gian-Marco Petrozzi, 20, (Trentham, Staffordshire) won the Welsh open by nine shots and had top tens in the Portuguese amateur and St Andrews Links Trophy.

Charlie Strickland, 18, (Ham Manor) won the Duncan Putter and the Peter McEvoy Trophy and helped England to defend the boys’ Home Internationals.

Andrew Wilson, 23, (Darlington) won the 2017 Lee Westwood Trophy and was runner-up in the North of England amateur. 

Burnage, Clements, Gaunt, Hague, Jordan and Petrozzi were all in the England Home Internationals team

 

England A Squad:

George Bloor, 22, (Cavendish) was runner-up in the 2016 English amateur championship and represented England in the 2017 Costa Ballena Tournament. 

Bailey Gill, 20, (Lindrick) won the Bernard Darwin Salver and was runner-up in the Dutch junior open. 

Ben Jones, 18, (Northamptonshire County) topped the England Golf boys’ order of merit having won the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters and the Duke of York Young Champions Trophy.

Tom Sloman, 20, (Taunton & Pickeridge) won the U21 Dutch junior open, was runner up in the Irish stroke play, and a semi-finalist in the English amateur.

Josh McMahon, 22, (Wallasey) was runner-up in both the Portuguese amateur and the Duncan Putter in Wales.

Nick Poppleton, 23, (Wath) was a semi-finalist in the English amateur, third in the North of England amateur and seventh in the Lee Westwood Trophy.
