East Staffordshire Borough Council set to support National Heart Month

The campaign, designed to raise awareness February 2016 is National Heart Month and Council venues across East Staffordshire will be hosting various activities to help raise awareness. Health Walks, Zumba, running and CPR courses will be taking place at both Meadowside and Uttoxeter Leisure Centres, as well as across the Borough.

National Heart Month, a British Heart Foundation Campaign, aims to get people across the country ‘heart-healthy’ and encourages them to try new activities and make small changes to their lifestyles in order to do so.

Heart disease covers several types of heart problem including Angina, Strokes and Heart Attacks and affects millions of people each year. The British Heart Foundation works hard to help support people with heart disease as well as find ways to stop it.

Councillor Bernard Peters, UK Healthy Cities Network-Politicians Chair, said: “The National Heart Month is a great campaign in raising the awareness and promoting the health benefits in leading a healthy lifestyle. East Staffordshire Borough Council is pleased to be able to support The British Heart Foundation by offering these activities.

Councillor Colin Whittaker, Deputy Leader for Cultural Services, said: The Leisure Centres and Sports Development Teams, along with our partners, have worked really hard to create programmes that offer something for everyone who want to be active and healthy. The recommended exercise each week for adults is 150 minutes and each day for children 5 -18 years, 60 minutes so why not come along and see if there is something that suits you?”

As part of the campaign, Friday 5th February is “Wear it Beat it” day and will see staff and class participants at the venues wearing red to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. To get involved in “Wear it Beat it”, go to the British Heart Foundation website.
