Rebecca Bedford- BWF 2017 World Para-Badminton Championships
Staffordshire player Rebecca Bedford recently returned from the 2017 World Para-Badminton Championships which was held in Ulsan, South Korea from the 22nd to 26th November. 264 players from 43 countries competed in the tournament which 
took place over five days.
Rebecca, from Yoxall who trains at the Friary Leisure Centre in Lichfield, competed in the SS6 classification, playing in the singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles competitions. Rebecca and her partner, Rachel Choong won the final in women’s doubles and therefore retain their title as World Champions. Rebecca also progressed to the final in mixed doubles with her French partner and won the silver medal and she won the bronze in singles.
Rebecca says “The competition was a fantastic experience with some of the toughest games I have ever played. It was great to meet so many players from all around the world and to be able to test my badminton skills against them. It’s really good to see more and more players competing at these events.”
Para badminton is becoming ever more competitive as the sport progresses towards its debut in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.
Rebecca is currently studying history at Sheffield University, where she is supported by the Elite Sports Performance Scheme, and has been selected for the inaugural GB squad, who have started intense training ready for competing in Tokyo 2020.
