Rounders England- Rounders volunteer rewarded at 55th Annual Torch Trophy Trust Awards

On Wednesday 7th March 2018 the Annual Torch Trophy Trust Awards will be held at the Army & Navy Club, Pall Mall, London.

This prestigious event, in its 55th year, was set up to recognise and celebrate volunteers in local communities who have shown outstanding work and dedication to sport.

The 2018 event will be attended by Rounders England representatives, there to witness the acceptance of the award in the category of Outstanding Service, by Dave Dorrell.

Dave’s dedication to Rounders is unprecedented. He volunteered for the governing body of Rounders for most of his adult life. His first role was as Schools Officer for the National Rounders Association (now Rounders England) from 1981 to 2006, Vice Chairman from 2001 to 2006, and then Chairman from 2006 to 2016.

Throughout his time volunteering at a national level, Dave also volunteered at a local level, being league secretary and then chair of the Dorset Mixed Adult Rounders League. Although Dave retired from education in 2016, he has continued to be involved in local youth rounders, organising the Dorset Youth League, with over 200 fixtures every summer.

Alison Howard, Rounders England CEO, nominated Dave for the award. She said;

It is rare nowadays for someone to devote so much time to one sport as a volunteer. Rounders England is truly grateful for the various contributions and the impact that Dave has had over the years, and a Torch Trophy Trust award is an amazing way to acknowledge this contribution.”

HRH The Duke of Gloucester will present trophies and will be accompanied at the ceremony by Trust President, Sir Bobby Charlton CBE.

Dave Dorrell had this to say about his nomination;

I am delighted that the Torch Trophy Trust has selected me for an award. It is very humbling to know that someone wishes to acknowledge my efforts. In my case, I am extremely grateful to Alison Howard and Rounders England for considering my contribution worthy of recognition and making the nomination.

For 30 years, even during the challenging times, I enjoyed my voluntary roles with the National Rounders Association and then Rounders England. I have always savoured promoting participation in our magnificent sport and continue to do so on a local level.”
