Tackling Inactivity: A guide to Sport England’s approach and investment.

The purpose of this investment guide is to explain our approach to tackling inactivity, and to provide some general guidance to organisations considering applying for funding from us or seeking to work in partnership with us. We would also recommend reading Sporting Future and Towards an Active Nation to give some further context.

This guide will be supplemented by a series of more detailed documents as and when funding becomes available, starting in December 2016 with the publication of the Active Ageing prospectus.

Major Events Bidding and Legacy Fund

Our Major Events Bidding and Legacy Fund investment guide outlines the two ways that we’re looking to invest in organisations and make the most of major events.

Our strategy Towards an Active Nation commits us to investing £2m in organisations that can either engage less physically active individuals or develop their business to generate a better financial return.

Our two investment objectives include:

  • To help national governing bodies (NGBs) hosting major events evolve their business model and derive a greater financial return from their existing customers (players, volunteers, spectators)
  • To develop programmes that engage with individuals local to the major event, who are currently less likely to take part regularly in sport or physical activity.

This guidance document also outlines our investment principles and criteria and gives detail on how to apply for investment.

Funding major events

In addition to our Major Events Bidding and Legacy Fund, we’re also launching a new fund of up to £1m to support prospective hosts in developing their bids to bring major events to England.

This additional fund will bring a coordinated approach to bidding across the country and ensure that the best bid for an event from England is identified and supported as the preferred candidate. The fund aligns to the DCMS Gold Framework Open in a new window and will support events identified by UK Sport through the Gold Event Series Open in a new window.

If you think you and your event are eligible for support from this fund and you would like to discuss further, please email: katie.legg@sportengland.org.

New Active Lives figures released – New activities added as part of comprehensive national survey

The survey, which runs 365 days a year, asks people aged 16 and over across England about the sport and physical activities they take part in. Results will be published twice a year. 200,000 people completed the first round of the survey between November 2015 and November 2016, making Active Lives the biggest and most comprehensive survey of its kind and an important source of detailed and reliable information about what people do and enjoy.

Key statistics include:

  • The number of adults who do less than 30 minutes of moderate intensity sport and physical activity per week
  • The number of adults who do 150 minutes or more of moderate intensity sport and physical activity a week, meeting the guidelines recommended by the Chief Medical Officer
  • The most popular types of activity.

A Code for Sports Governance. UK Sport and Sport England

The code has three tiers and will apply to any organisation seeking funding from us or UK Sport, regardless of size and sector, including national governing bodies of sport, clubs, charities and local authorities.

The code is proportionate, expecting the highest standards of good governance from organisations requesting the largest public investments, including:

  • Increased skills and diversity in decision making, with a target of at least 30 per cent gender diversity on boards
  • Greater transparency, for example publishing more information on the structure, strategy and financial position of the organisation
  • Constitutional arrangements that give boards the prime role in decision making.
