Staffordshire pair win Trust national final

A pair of Staffordshire women golfers have won the national England Golf Trust stableford competition, which has raised at least £4000 to support young people who need financial help to play the game.

Kay Marshall and Jo Norton, from Branston Golf Club, scored 42 points in the betterball final at King’s Norton Golf Club, Worcestershire.

“It’s very special and we’ll always remember this win with pride,” said Kay, who plays off 20, while Jo is a 32-handicapper.

They won by two points from the team from Thornbury, Bristol. Third place went to Chigwell, Essex, with 39 points and fourth to Lichfield, Staffordshire on 38.

The competition was designed to raise funds for the Trust which provides grants and bursaries for young men and women in education or aged up to 21. The tournament attracted an initial entry from 150 clubs, which held qualifying rounds, and over 30 pairs reaching the national final.

Branston Golf Club are keen supporters of the Trust – chairman Di Horsley is a member – but Kay and Jo enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the charity. “It opened our eyes to all the work that goes on and how the Trust invests in young people,” said Kay.

Jo and Kay had never played together before qualifying for the final. Kay remarked: “We had 9-holes together a few nights ago to get to know each other and now we’re going to meet up more regularly. We played well together in the final – Jo was better than me, but I was there when needed!”
