Winners of Vanessa Brown Volunteer Award 2016 announced

Monday 11th July 2016

Sported is delighted to announce Wendy Robinson and Martyn Brawn as the winners of the Vanessa Brown Volunteer Award 2016.

The award recognises and celebrates the contribution made by Sported’s volunteers to the charity’s work and commemorates the life of former Sported employee, Vanessa Brown, who sadly passed away in June 2014.

The judging panel acknowledged it was an extremely tough final decision given the calibre of the shortlist, and indeed all of Sported’s volunteers. The winners were presented with their awards by Sir Keith Mills and Baroness Sue Campbell at a special celebratory dinner at the House of Lords.

Wendy has worked with a Sported member group every year since she joined the volunteer team in Northern Ireland and was praised for always going the extra mile. As club leader at North Down ABC explains, “Wendy has helped to build our confidence, skills and self-belief that we can successfully run our club. Wendy and Sported helped us when no one else did.  We would not be where we are without her help. Nothing was ever too much trouble when we asked her for help. She is amazing and absolutely deserves this award”.

Martyn – this year’s West Midlands representative – has been a volunteer with Sported since 2011. In this time he has mentored six members and supported them to establish the foundations for growth and sustainability. His skills in business planning, finance and strategy are complemented by his patience and supportive nature, adapting his style in accordance with each member’s requirements.

One Sported member to have benefited from Martyn’s expertise is Rob Palmer from City of Birmingham Basketball Club. “Martyn has supported me with effective planning, short, medium and long-term, helping me prioritise tasks to secure the future of the clubs whilst ensuring the club still delivers its day-to-day activity. His support in developing my understanding of cash flow forecasts and effective projections has been invaluable.”

There was also a special posthumous award in memory of North West volunteer Ken Johnson, who sadly passed away earlier this year.
