Little moments of success: How youth coaches create the environment for life skill development in vulnerable young people. Research Summary No 28.

Coaches can play an important role in the development of life skills among young people who are often excluded from society. New research from the Netherlands has used theories from sociology to present a method for coaches to help create the right environment so young people can have fun but also learn to manage the stresses of everyday life. Magnifying the microstructure: Observing elite coaching behaviour in different contexts. Research Summary No 29.

Microscopes enable us to magnify materials and analyse the composition of their structures on tiny scales – their microstructures, in other words. Now, imagine for a minute we have a microscope that can be used to magnify a social process, such as coaching. As well as showing us how coaches behave, the ability to magnify could add further layers of detail such as how their specific behaviours change in different contexts. Academics in Scotland have taken this approach in a new season-long study focusing on an elite female rugby union coach. Download a copy

Learning from reflective leaders. Research Summary No 30.

Our research has shown high proportions of coaches say they engage in reflection. However, we are less sure what their reflective processes look like and what impact they have on the coach as a person and their coaching practice. A new research study conducted by a highly experienced executive coach, focusing on seven UK-based leaders who see reflection as a key part of who they are, provides coaches in sport and physical activity with an opportunity to learn more about the benefits of reflection and ideas on how to successfully engage in it. sports coach UK – Our work in Core Cities

sports coach UK have been working with the eight Core Cities and London throughout 2015/16. Through working with the Cities we have deepened our understanding about the values, motivations and barriers of participants and the key skills, qualities and competencies of deliverers. Linked to this, we are working with a number of cities to develop tailored, informal learning programmes that suit the learning styles and behaviours of those working within the inner city environment.

Some of the training has involved; social media training that looks at keeping participants engaged and active through social media as well as emotional intelligence training that helps the workforce to understand and control their own emotions and the emotions of those they work with. Lastly we have introduced behaviour change training which looks at what we understand about people and what this means for coaching in terms of moving people from being inactive or partly active to people that don’t think twice about regular activity.

This short film begins to show the impact the coaches are starting to have and what they are learning within the City environment.  This is just the start and we are using the learning to spread our reach further as we begin to work more closely with cities to develop a skilled and diverse workforce. sports coach UK – Help your coaches deal with issues which can have a negative impact on their sessions

Perhaps lateness is an issue or someone is constantly distracting others – how a coach manages these issues will have a major impact on the overall experience of a session’s participants.  sports coach UK has developed an eLearning module and face to face workshop to help coaches develop vital skills and confidence to encourage better behaviour in their participants.

The 30 minute ‘Inspiring Positive Behaviour in Sport’ eLearning module helps coaches develop skills in managing disruptive behaviour and creating a positive coaching environment.  Coaches can enrol on this eLearning course at the sports coach UK Learning Hub.

Our face to face workshops offer a relaxed and supportive environment where coaches can spend time to develop and share ideas with coaches across all sports.  Skills and techniques can be practised and then applied with confidence within their own sessions.  This short video shows how attending this workshop helped her Yvonne to reduce antisocial behaviour at her club.

RYA – Form their latest Legal Update: Small Business Rate Relief
Sports clubs in England who own their own facilities, whether freehold or leasehold, and pay business rates may be able to take advantage of Small Business Rate Relief (SBRR). This is available if the club occupies only one property with a rateable value of £12,000 or less.

Currently, if the rateable value is less than £6,000, then 100% relief is available. This gradually decreases from 100% until the rateable value reaches £12,000.

From 1 April 2017 the exempt threshold will be permanently doubled, thereby providing 100% relief for clubs with a rateable value of up to £12,001. A further enhancement means that relief will be available on a decreasing scale for clubs with a rateable value of between £12,000 and £15,000.

Importantly, SBRR is not discretionary, it is mandatory.

LTA – Tennis for Kids initiative made available to an extra 5,000 young players

We are pleased to announce an additional 5,000 places have been made available for Tennis for Kids in partnership with Highland Spring. The Tennis for Kids initiative initially aimed to inspire 10,000 children aged 5-8 to pick up a racket and play tennis for the first time. It has had such a positive uptake, with all 10,000 spaces filled in under a week, that an extra 5,000 places have now been made available. The extra courses will be running across the country and will continue to be delivered by the same 1,000 coaches recruited to lead the sessions.

Tennis for Kids, designed to focus on fun, flexibility and getting active, is looking to establish greater accessibility into tennis, with a view to creating a new generation of tennis loving children.

The initiative will continue to offer a free six-week courses led by specially trained coaches, and free rackets will be given away to children who complete their course. Find out more information about Tennis for Kids
