The Great British Tennis Weekend – Inspiring A New Generation In Burton
In 2015 Burton Tennis and Squash Club hosted the Great British Tennis Weekend an LTA initiative aimed to get more players young and old trying tennis for free! Sessions were held throughout the day from mini, youth, adult and cardio tennis all of which are delivered weekly at the club. Flyers were handed out at local schools from which Tom Wright came to try tennis for the first time.
Tom joined other children in a session where he began to learn the basic tennis strokes as well as having lots of fun. From that day Tom age 8 has now joined the mini red sessions twice a week in addition to an individual lesson. All this has aided him in achieving his mini awards where he will soon be going for the highest one for his group as well as coming runner up twice in the clubs internal competition. Not only has Tom got the tennis bug but his younger sister Alice takes part in the Munchkins tennis, a session for 3 to 5 year olds who are taking there first steps into tennis.
Tom’s Mum Tracey has also joined the adults sessions attending coaching as well as social tennis where any member can come and play. “I brought Tom for the Great British Tennis Weekend at the club and was so impressed with the coaches rapour with the children and their knowledge, interpretation and communication in all tennis related activities.” Tracey commented after reflecting on why they joined the club. “Seeing all of this made me and Tom want to join the club because we were so impressed and as you can see we have got hooked playing tennis.“ Burton Tennis and Squash Club situated on Ashby Road will be hosting the Great British Tennis Weekend again this year on Saturday the 16th of July with even more sessions available than last year.
