Women in Sport – Changing the game for girls: in action report published

Women in Sport releases the findings of a two-year project aimed at improving the provision of PE for girls in schools. Changing the Game for Girls: In Action makes tried and tested recommendations that are now being applied in schools across the country, to provide a solution to the alarmingly low levels of girls’ playing sport.

Only 7% of girls currently meet the government recommendations for physical activity and a third of girls age 12-15 in England are classified as overweight or obese. Now, within weeks of plans being announced to fund more sport in schools through a tax on sugary drinks, Changing the Game for Girls: In Action shares tested strategies on how best to address these shocking figures.

Funded by the Department of Health, the new research aims to inspire girls to take part in and enjoy sport at school, developing a positive relationship with sport from a young age as a long term, effective way to stay healthy throughout their adult lives.

Nearly 2 million fewer women than men take part in sport at least once per week and, finding from their study in 2012 that this gender gap between girls and boys playing sport begins to open at around age 8 – much earlier than previously thought – Women in Sport developed and piloted new approaches and interventions for girls at 25 schools across England.

The findings in our report highlight the importance of allowing girls to help shape sports programmes more effectively to their needs, and to express their motivations and ideas, thus improving participation. This is most often achieved by establishing a way to capture the girls’ voices and working with the girls directly. View the full news item

Head injury and concussion guidelines – England and Wales Cricket Board

The following guidelines are based on the Zurich Consensus Statement published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in November 2013, a number of recent multisport forums, Consensus Panels and direct consultation with World Leaders and research centres in the field of concussion. The ECB medical panel has looked at best practice across sports and consulted documents such as FIFA ‘Concussion Guidelines’ 2014, BHRA and IRB / RFU 2014 guidelines.

Finally a consultation process was undertaken on 13th May 2015 with the ECB Medical panel, FCCC CMOs and Neurosurgical and Neurosciences concussion research team from NIHR Birmingham. The issues specific to cricket were debated, resulting in these concussion guidelines. The current management pathway helps to define application in the cricket environment. The consensus panel agreed that decisions taken and tools recommended would be supported by existing scientific evidence where available.

Department for Culture, Media and Sport – New Governance Code will ensure highest levels of transparency in British sport

Charter for Sports Governance in the UK published. UK sports bodies and organisations that want to receive public funding will have to adhere to a new Code of Governance to help ensure that the highest levels of transparency, ethical standards and leadership are present across sport in this country.

A Charter for Sports Governance in the United Kingdom has been published today that outlines some of the main themes that will feature in the code that will be finalised later this year and come into effect in 2017.

While governance in the publicly funded sport sector in the UK is already at a good standard the Code, being drawn up by UK Sport and Sport England, will build on this further. It will be ambitious and set high expectations for any sports organisation that wants to be in receipt of public funding. This will not only protect that investment but also help good organisations become exceptional. View the full press release

Sustrans Children cut pollution

Almost half a million children cycled and scootered to school as part of our Big Pedal competition this year. They saved over 63 million balloons of carbon dioxide from being emitted in car journeys by pedalling over three million miles, according to our results released today.

The Big Pedal, which ran between 18 and 29 April, is the UK’s largest inter-school cycling and scooting challenge, funded by the Bike Hub. Over 1,300 schools competed to make the most journeys on a bike or scooter, saving parents over £384,000 in fuel not used for the school run.

During the two weeks of the Big Pedal children burned a total 57 million calories and travelled more than 123 times around the world! Five primary and four secondary schools across the country picked up prizes for overall UK winners in their categories, as well as many more regional prize winners.

One of the overall winners for UK schools is:  St Margaret Ward Catholic School and Arts College, Stoke on Trent (Secondary classes, 5 day challenge)
