School Games 2019 – A day of sun, sport and celebrations!

Monday 15th July 2019

Friday 28th June 2019 saw a day filled with sun and sport as 2,000 young athletes from schools across the county competed in a variety of sports at the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent School Games. The sports included Sport4All, handball, cross country, tri golf, rounders, rugby mega fest, and trampolining.

For the first time ever, a special festival also took place during the School Games, our This Girl Can festival. This saw Year 9 girls from 7 schools take part in football, boxing, dance and tennis.

These girls came together to co-design all elements of this from the sports, deliverers and the atmosphere. The aim of this festival was to inspire, encourage and develop their interest in physical activity.

The day began after all schools had arrived and gathered around the stage to watch the opening ceremony. This saw dance performances take place from The King’s Church of England High School and Haywood Academy.

All of the young athletes then took part in a mass warm-up to get ready for their busy day of sport.

GB and International Triple Jumper, Laura Samuel and Team England Swimmer, Elliot Clogg attended the event and were a part of the opening ceremony, answering questions on stage and wishing the participants good luck in their competitions.

During the day the sports stars spent some time with our enthusiastic media volunteers, who were pupils from Ormiston Horizon Academy. The pupils began the day by interviewing the athletes, asking pre-prepared questions about their achievements, their motivations and how they like to spend their free time.

The media volunteers continued to put their interviewing skills to practice by speaking with participants, parents, teachers and even a local MP. Check out the video below to see these interviews, or click here.

Throughout the day, the sports stars also spectated the competitions as well as kindly signing autographs and having photos taken.

As the day went by, pupils took part in the sports whilst representing their schools and hoping to be named as county champions. Teachers and family members were on hand to support and cheer on the young athletes.

The event also saw many local special guests including MPs, Councillors and Mayors/Mayoresses.

When all of the competitions had ended, the results were announced and 1st, 2nd and 3rd of each sport were all individually congratulated onstage by Laura Samuel and Elliot Clogg.
